Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
