The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a intense examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
