Space Traveler Reveals Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of space.
The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
