No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
